This unique vessel has been shaped into the form of a dog with minimal anatomical design. It rests slightly elevated off the ground on four conical legs. The head rises out of the shoulder of the vessel and is simply modeled, with the suggestion of ears and horizontally incised lines depicting the eyes and mouth. A little nub of a tail protrudes from the rear. The entire surface of the work was once covered with resist painted patterns in black–remnants of which are still visible along the body of the vessel.

In ancient Mexico, dogs served a variety of roles and were highly esteemed animals. Sculptures of dogs found in tombs would have likely been used as sources of protection for the deceased or as companions in the afterlife. Dogs during ancient times were consumed as well. Considering that this work is a vessel, it would have once held an offering to the deceased inside, which suggests that it is more likely a replica of a beloved pet accompanying its owner.
