Often, the enchantment of an unusual object is its unexpected use. This charming work of art is in fact a musical instrument. The center is hollowed out to give a deep resonance when beaten. It would have been used in festivals or ceremonies and most likely in unison with others, which must have filled the air with an extraordinary sound.

In many cultures, musical instruments were essential features of life. Used for pleasure, for dance and the serious business of communicating with spirits. Often features of a human or animal are carved on the work. In this example, the elegant head seems to be in the throes of musical ecstasy; and the instrument itself still retains for us its unique voice.
