Terracotta Polychrome Trophy Head

Highly detailed effigy-head vessels appear in both the Carrillo and Galo Polychrome ceramic style. This particular one is of the highest quality as evidenced by the fine painting technique and careful modeling. The most dramatic element is the eyes with appliquéd pupils, which gives them a very realistic appearance. Eye masks, like goggles, are symbolic of distress, indicating this may be a prisoner or sacrificial victim. An ornamental chain under the chin, with two stylized snakeheads at either end, further indicates a prisoner taken in battle. Like the trophy heads carved in basalt, this vessel might have served to remind a great warrior of his triumph in war. The overall beauty of the object and the dignity of the face suggest the captive was of noble rank. More than a functional object, this beautiful vessel is tangible proof of a thriving artistic culture that left its mark on history through the art it produced.
