This globular vessel with flared pedestal foot is painted in orange, deep auburn and black with molded eyes, mouth, nose and ears. The facial features are quite simplified, however the vessel’s decorative elements are intricately painted with various motifs. The most principal motif depicts a row of stylized jaguars silhouetted in black against the white ground. The other bands contain symbolic elements which may be jaguar related. Additionally, below the mouth rim is a row of hook designs.
This vessel may have served an important function during shaman rituals as many vessels created during this period would have been used to hold an offering of liquid. The artistic ingenuity and beautiful shape of this vessel makes it a masterpiece of well-developed skill and remarkable creativity.
