When this coin was newly minted, the Roman Empire stretched from Spain to Persia, from Britain to Egypt. This denarius may have passed then from hand to hand, from a sailor in Athens, to a merchant in Ephesus, to an actor in Alexandria. The energy of those ancient lives, for which this coin is perhaps the only clue, radiates from it still.
