When the Roman Empire was at its height, this jug perhaps contained fine olive oil or the extracted essence of some rare spice. The preciousness of that now-vanished commodity is reflected in the use of glass, which was a luxury in its own right. Today, this superb and unusual vessel seems filled with the rarest of all essences: the scent of the past, of human history.
