This sculpture depicts a seated woman, representing the beauty of female fertility. The figure displays unique anatomical design with thin, curved arms rested upon large, accentuated legs. The figure is molded with clearly defined biological markers of her womanhood, displaying an essence of fertility. Additionally, this figure’s front body is covered in geometrical tattooing in red, orange and black.
The ancient Costa Ricans placed a great deal of energy creating fertility effigy vessels as a respectful gesture to emphasize the important role it played in their culture. This artifact most likely played an important role during fertility rituals and may represent the ancestor of a member from their tribe.
