Nayarit Sculpture of a Standing Woman

The women of Ancient Mexico raised their children, looked after their families and the affairs of the village and held such positions as midwives and healer. Looking at the wealth of paint and jewelry on this lovely female figure we are struck by the fact that this is a woman of some importance. Perhaps she represented a high-ranking member of a royal family or was married to the chieftain of her tribe. Whatever the cause for her fine raiment’s, she is a beautiful piece that speaks to us of her life as a privileged person in Ancient Meso-America.
