Classical antiquity is a broad term for a long period of cultural history centered on the Mediterranean Sea, comprising the interlocking civilizations of ancient Greece and ancient Rome, collectively known as the Greco-Roman world. The three birds perched on the side of this exquisite vessel have plumage which is at one with the decorative geometry. The birds inch cautiously toward the rim, hoping to steal a peck at the pot’s long vanished contents.
