In many ancient societies, the horse was a mark of status: the possession of such an animal to ride into battle gave one a higher standing in civic affairs. It was also an animal much favored by the gods, especially Poseidon, lord of the ocean and bringer of earthquakes (which were thought to resemble a thundering herd of horses). This forceful, stylized votive bronze seems to capture the very essence of the creature and to convey its importance as an offering to the gods.
