The iconographic representation of women in Luba sculpture is widespread and correlates to the important role of women in Luba society. This fine staff features a beautiful woman with a long curved chin and subtle warm smile. Her hair is tied back and portrayed with a series of diagonal lines most likely representing a long braid. She is standing alertly with her knees slightly bent and holding her breasts. A series of diamond shaped carvings appear on all four sides of her pregnant belly. This staff wonderfully represents the iconic beauty and fertility of the Luba people.
