The gesture this vivid woman makes with her hands is quite common in the tomb figures of Western Mexico. The gesture is perhaps a ritual of worship – part of the act of praying to the Gods – or a sign of mourning. If the exact nuance of the gesture is unclear, we today have no trouble understanding the deeply felt emotions with which it was made. A remarkable sculpture whose impact remains undiminished by time.
