This is a stone sculpture of the head of a Bodhisattva. Peacefully gazing downwards, the figure has a serene facial expression, radiating an approachable and amiable aura.
The most important hint for dating is perhaps the crown worn by the figure. Unlike the decorated Sui crowns which are also stunning in size, the bodhisattva crowns in the Northern Dynasties are modest and simplistic. This form of crown, which actually resembles more of a light cavalry hat than a crown, is a remnant of the nomadic tradition of the Northern Dynasties at that time. – (HK.2034)
