Small in size and intricate in detail, this vessel would once have held perfumed oil, the small opening and gently curved spout allowing for only a small amount of the precious liquid to be poured. Known as a balsarium, these were often anthropomorphic in style. This vessel is in the form of a female’s head, her hair gently swept back from her face in typically Classical style. Her face is pensive yet gentle, and the vessel ends with her neck acting as the base. There is a tall and thin handle at the back to aid the gentle pouring of the liquid.
