What is amazing about Chinesco figures like this one is that, reduced to the sketchiest anatomical details and wearing little more than their jewelry, they manage to radiate very tangible human warmth. This piece is quite sensuous to the touch- as if the white and orange slipped terracotta were glowing from within. Stylistically likened to oriental figures, this figure seems neither from East nor West but from another world altogether. The body transcends normal proportion to achieve a pleasing order all its own. Hands on his hips, the figure holds himself erect, with a forlorn expression on his face, which is unadorned except for his eyes, which are decorated with a red slip. In his own sphere, this figure is undoubtedly an individual of substance. – (PF.3647)
